Why I Built Spill.Media: From Campaigns to Systems, Search Infrastructure and Institutional Intelligence

For much of my career, I was paid to make other companies’ systems perform better. Across digital marketing, iGaming, technology and international markets, I worked across acquisition, SEO and search strategy, affiliate operations, media buying, CRM, content, product, commercial operations and growth. Over time, moving between agency, operator and executive environments changed how I understood performance. I stopped seeing these disciplines as separate functions. Search influences acquisition. Product shapes retention. Data changes decision-making. Technology determines scalability. Content creates discoverability and authority. Commercial strategy determines whether any of it ultimately creates value. That led to a more important question: **Why spend an entire career optimizing other people’s systems without learning how to design, build and own systems of your own?** That question became a turning point in how I approached strategy, technology and entrepreneurship—and eventually became part of the operating philosophy behind **Spill.Media**. The objective was no longer simply to optimize performance. **It was to understand the system producing it.**

Why I Built Spill.Media: From Campaigns to Systems, Search Infrastructure and Institutional Intelligence

For much of my career, I was paid to make other companies' systems perform better.

Acquisition systems. Search systems. Affiliate operations. Media buying. CRM. Content. Product. Commercial operations.

Over time, that created a different question:

Why spend an entire career optimizing systems built by other people without learning how to build systems of your own?

That question eventually became Spill.Media.

But Spill.Media was not born as a logo, an agency proposition or a publishing brand.

It emerged from nearly two decades of working across digital marketing, search, iGaming, technology, operations and international markets — and from gradually changing the way I looked at business problems.

I stopped seeing campaigns.

I started seeing systems.


The Shift: From Campaign Performance to System Design

Early in a digital career, most problems appear tactical.

Traffic is down.

CAC is too high.

A landing page does not convert.

Organic rankings decline.

A campaign fails to scale.

A CRM funnel leaks.

The natural reaction is to optimize the thing directly in front of you.

That approach can work.

But it often solves the visible symptom rather than the structural problem producing it.

My own thinking changed as I moved between search, performance marketing, affiliate businesses, operators, technology companies and executive roles.

The question became less:

“How do we improve this campaign?”

And increasingly:

“What system produced this outcome in the first place?”

That distinction has shaped nearly everything I have built since.


Amsterdam, 2015: Seeing the System Behind the Campaign

One of the moments that accelerated that transition came in June 2015, when I arrived at the Amsterdam RAI for a major international digital conference.

By then, I had already spent years working across performance marketing and search, including chapters involving companies such as Webpals, Spiral Solutions and international digital businesses.

I understood traffic.

I understood acquisition economics.

I understood the commercial pressure created by daily performance metrics.

But exposure to a broader international technology and digital ecosystem changed the scale of the questions I was asking.

Instead of looking only at campaigns, channels and individual KPIs, I became increasingly interested in the infrastructure underneath them:

  • how companies acquire information;
  • how decisions move through organizations;
  • how technology changes operating leverage;
  • how search demand reveals market structure;
  • how distribution compounds;
  • how products create defensibility;
  • and how intellectual property accumulates inside organizations.

That became the beginning of a much larger transition.

From optimization to ownership.


From Agency Thinking to Ownership

An agency can become exceptionally good at solving problems.

But there is an important difference between solving somebody else's problem and owning the system that creates the solution.

Over time, I increasingly used commercial work as a laboratory.

The operating cycle became:

Build → Test → Measure → Learn → Rebuild

Each iteration should create something that remains after the campaign ends.

That asset might be:

  • technology;
  • proprietary data;
  • intellectual property;
  • search visibility;
  • operational knowledge;
  • a reusable process;
  • a distribution channel;
  • an audience;
  • or simply a better model of how a market works.

Revenue matters.

But knowledge compounds too.

And the strongest businesses increasingly compound both.


Why the Name Spill.Media?

The name came from Northern Europe.

Living and working across markets including Estonia gave me a strong appreciation for Scandinavian and Nordic approaches to functionality, restraint and clarity.

One simple Norwegian word stayed with me:

Spill.

In Norwegian Bokmål, spill can mean game or play.

In English, the same word has another useful meaning:

to reveal what was previously contained.

That accidental overlap eventually became a useful description of what I wanted Spill.Media to represent.

Play on one side.

Reveal on the other.

Because strong strategic work often does exactly that.

It reveals the friction that dashboards hide.

It exposes dependencies between seemingly unrelated systems.

It identifies leverage points.

It makes invisible structures visible.

That became Spill.Media.


Think Five Moves Upstream

One principle now sits behind much of my work:

Think Five Moves Upstream.

When something breaks, the most visible failure is rarely the most interesting part of the problem.

If organic traffic falls, the problem may not be SEO.

It may be information architecture.

If content production slows, the problem may not be writers.

It may be the publishing system.

If customer acquisition becomes too expensive, the problem may not be media buying.

It may be positioning, product economics, retention or measurement.

If an organization cannot use AI effectively, the problem may not be the model.

It may be the data architecture feeding it.

The operating question becomes:

What created the condition that created the condition that created this result?

An operator asks:

How can I make this system perform better?

A builder eventually asks:

Why is the system designed this way at all?

That distinction is central to how I approach strategy.


Spill.Media as an Operating Environment

Today, I do not think of Spill.Media simply as a consultancy.

It is closer to an operating environment connecting several disciplines:

Strategy

Understanding markets, business models, competitive structures and operating constraints.

Search Intelligence

Using search behavior, information retrieval and entity relationships to understand demand and how information is discovered.

Technology

Building systems rather than relying exclusively on campaigns and manual workflows.

Research

Turning fragmented information into structured intelligence.

Media

Creating distribution and authority around original research, products and ideas.

Experimentation

Building, measuring and improving continuously.

These disciplines become much more powerful when they operate together rather than as isolated functions.


Why I Build Ventures Instead of a Single Portfolio

The projects associated with Spill.Media are intentionally different.

They are not attempts to repeat the same website in different verticals.

Each exists because I wanted to investigate a different problem.

And each tests a different capability.


Slots.Academy: Turning Search Demand Into Information Infrastructure

Slots.Academy began with a relatively straightforward observation.

A large amount of information exists across the online gaming ecosystem, but much of it is fragmented, commercially biased, poorly structured or difficult to compare.

Instead of building another conventional content site, I began treating the project as an information architecture problem.

The objective became broader:

What would a slot-information platform look like if it were designed for humans, search engines and machine retrieval from the beginning?

That required thinking beyond articles.

It meant building structured entities around games, providers, mechanics, comparisons and related information.

It meant thinking about:

  • large-scale structured datasets;
  • programmatic information architecture;
  • canonical relationships;
  • structured data;
  • entity resolution;
  • internal linking;
  • search intent;
  • server-rendered discovery;
  • comparison systems;
  • AI retrieval;
  • and scalable publishing infrastructure.

The important part of Slots.Academy, from my perspective, is therefore not simply its subject matter.

It is the system underneath it.

It represents an experiment in turning search demand into structured information infrastructure.


University Reviews: From Review Site to AI-Native Information Product

University Reviews represents a different problem.

The obvious version of the product would be another university-review website.

That is not particularly interesting.

The more ambitious question is:

What happens if university discovery is rebuilt as an information engine rather than a collection of reviews?

Universities generate enormous amounts of fragmented information:

programs, locations, rankings, tuition, outcomes, research, admissions criteria, student experiences, accreditation data and thousands of other attributes.

The opportunity is therefore not simply to publish more pages.

It is to build a structured system capable of connecting those attributes meaningfully.

The long-term ambition is an information platform designed for a world in which users increasingly discover information through AI systems, conversational interfaces and highly structured search experiences.

That changes the product.

Reviews become one signal rather than the product itself.

Data architecture becomes strategic.

Entity resolution becomes strategic.

Provenance becomes strategic.

Structured comparison becomes strategic.

Original information becomes strategic.

The goal is to build an asset capable of competing not merely for traditional search rankings, but for a future information market where the quality and structure of the underlying data may become more valuable than the webpage presenting it.


Mr. Casino: Market Knowledge From the Operator Side

Mr. Casino comes from another chapter entirely.

My professional experience in Estonia and across Northern European gaming markets gave me exposure to the industry from both operator and affiliate perspectives.

Working with brands and operating environments including Optibet provided something that cannot be learned entirely from keyword tools or competitor research:

market context.

How operators think.

How acquisition economics behave.

How affiliates influence distribution.

How regulation affects commercial decisions.

How products compete.

How local markets differ.

How customer behavior interacts with brand, payments, CRM and product.

That experience changed how I evaluate affiliate and information products.

The strongest affiliate businesses do not simply rank pages.

They understand the markets they describe.

Mr. Casino is therefore connected to a different part of my professional history: the intersection of operator knowledge, market intelligence, search and distribution.


Different Ventures. One Operating Thesis.

At first glance, projects such as Spill.Media, Slots.Academy and University Reviews may look unrelated.

They are not.

The vertical changes.

The underlying questions remain remarkably similar:

How is information structured?

How do people discover it?

How do machines understand it?

Where is the information fragmented or unreliable?

What should become data rather than prose?

What should become infrastructure rather than a campaign?

What can be built once and compound over time?

That is the common architecture.


Institutional Intelligence

This is also why I use the phrase Institutional Intelligence when describing Spill.Media.

The internet contains more information than most organizations could ever process.

The competitive advantage is rarely access to information alone.

It is the ability to determine:

what matters,

what connects,

what is noise,

what is evidence,

what is changing,

and what should be done next.

Institutional intelligence is the process of turning fragmented information into better organizational decisions.

Research should reduce uncertainty.

Strategy should alter decisions.

Technology should create leverage.

And the output should survive beyond the presentation that introduced it.


Substance Before Status

Another influence came from Northern European culture.

The Scandinavian idea commonly associated with Janteloven has many interpretations, but one principle resonated with me professionally:

substance matters more than status.

That translated into three principles behind Spill.Media.

Institutional Intelligence

Move beyond opinion.

Find patterns, evidence and structural relationships that reduce uncertainty.

Strategic Impact

Research has little value if nothing changes because of it.

The output should alter a decision, architecture, operating model or direction.

Lasting Value

Whenever possible, build capabilities that survive the original engagement.

A campaign disappears.

A system can compound.


Building for Humans, Search Engines and AI Systems

The next generation of information products will increasingly need to serve multiple audiences simultaneously.

A human needs clarity.

A search engine needs discoverable and understandable content.

An AI retrieval system needs information that can be identified, extracted and attributed correctly.

A business needs the underlying asset to create value.

Those requirements are not contradictory.

Done correctly, they reinforce one another.

A clearly named entity helps the reader.

It also improves machine understanding.

A cited primary source increases human trust.

It also improves provenance.

A structured comparison helps a customer make a decision.

It also creates machine-readable relationships.

Original research creates differentiation.

It also creates information worth citing.

The future of search therefore should not be reduced to manipulating a new generation of algorithms.

The more interesting opportunity is to build better information systems.


The Real Product Is the System

The logo came later.

The website came later.

The technology came later.

Even the individual ventures came later.

The philosophy came first.

Build something.

Observe what happens.

Understand the structure underneath the outcome.

Then improve the system rather than simply polishing the symptom.

That is how Spill.Media developed.

And it is still developing.
